Stockholm – A Capital Built on Islands

Stockholm is one of Europe’s most distinctive capitals, spread across numerous islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. The city combines historic architecture, elegant waterfronts, innovative design and easy access to nature.
Gamla Stan, the old town, is famous for its narrow cobbled streets, historic buildings and traditional cafés. Visitors can explore the Royal Palace, visit the Vasa Museum to see a remarkably preserved seventeenth-century warship, or discover the open-air Skansen museum, which showcases Swedish traditions and historic buildings.
The surrounding Stockholm Archipelago is another major attraction. Boat excursions take travellers to islands with fishing villages, peaceful beaches and scenic walking routes.
Getting there and getting around: Stockholm Arlanda Airport offers international connections, while commuter trains, the metro, buses, trams and ferries make moving around the city straightforward. Many central districts are also easy to explore on foot.
Connections to other destinations: Direct trains connect Stockholm with Gothenburg and Malmö, while international rail connections can take travellers towards Copenhagen. Overnight ferries connect Stockholm with Helsinki and other Baltic destinations, depending on the route and schedule.
